Setting Miscellaneous Preferences

This task describes how to set preferences to control Workbench appearance and behavior.

Note: To open the Preferences dialog, click the gear icon () at the top right of the Workbench.


Then click Miscellaneous Settings in the left column. The Miscellaneous Settings dialog appears.



  1. For Progress, select Always run in background to run long operations in background where possible.
    If selected, when operations are performed in background, a green progress indicator () appears in the lower right side of the status bar. Click the Progress view icon () to the right of the progress indicator to open the Progress view where you can see details of the operation or cancel an in-progress operation by clicking the red box.
  2. For Cabinet Expansion, select:
    Option Description
    Expand on Restart The Navigation view will expand to expose the same items that were exposed when the Workbench was last closed.
    Do Not Expand on Restart The Navigation view will not expose any hierarchy below the Cabinet level when it is launched. This setting may result in the Workbench launching faster.
  3. For Ribbon View Mode, select:
    Option Description
    Icon & Text The Workbench Ribbon displays both icons and command name text.
    Icon The Workbench Ribbon displays only command icons. (You can hover over an icon to display the command name.)
  4. For Email Separator, select Comma (,) or Semicolon(;) to specify the separator to be used between email recipient names when sending mail to users using the Publish > Compose Mail command.
  5. For Filter Feedback, select Emphasize Filter Elements to display elements with filtering attributes highlighted in color.
    The highlighting can be seen in the Navigation view and Details view.
    Note: Administrators configure the list of filter elements and color using the setFilterAttributeInfo.py jython script.
  6. For Navigation View Left Click Behavior, select:
    Option Description
    View Files on selection Left click selection in the Navigation view immediately displays the file. For example, a graphic file.
    View Structured Documents on seletion Left click selection in the Navigation view immediately displays the structured document. For example, a map or topic.
  7. For Pagination, select the number of objects to display per page in the Details view. Select All to display all items. This allows you to select and copy all items and paste them into another program. See Details View.
  8. Click Apply, then OK.
